Ancients make up the basic skill system in Lodoss in the form of rune
words engraved onto weapons and armour imbuing them with mystical
powers. The rune words that make up Ancients vary in length depending
on the type and strength of the Ancient and different types of
equipment hold different lengths of rune words. Thus combinations of
Ancients can be made on one piece of equipment to further enhance the
strength of that item but only within the constraints of the item's
